Breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day; particularly for those who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It is advised for people with diabetes to limit the intake of sugar and carbohydrates. However, it is important to remember that your diet still need to provide a healthy source of calories to revitalize your body in the morning.
Kelly O’Connor, RD, the director of diabetes education at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore says: “Remember that first thing in the morning, you have gone many hours without eating and your body needs fuel. If you’re not giving it any, it will create its own from stored sugar that get released into your bloodstream” This often results in increased blood sugar levels.
A Balanced breakfast food is essential when it comes to diabetes management. “Your body is fasting, you’re not giving it any energy, it slows down to conserve what is left, which is counterproductive. The simple solution to both of these issues is to eat a good breakfast” Kelly O’Connor said.
Poor breakfast quality can happen anytime of the week —may it be when you’re running late taking your meal while on the go. It may also happen during the weekend when go stack up on big breakfast.
On the other hand, skipping breakfast is a big No. If you fast long enough, your body will go into hunger mode. By the time, you will be having your meal, chances are you will over eat. Your body will then absorb all the fat from that meal and store it.
That is not good for someone with type 2 Diabetes.
Here are some balanced breakfast meals for diabetics:
Breakfast on the go – a piece of fruit like bananas, apples, pears with low fat Greek yogurt or a burrito made with scrambled egg on whole-wheat tortilla.
Greek yogurt topped with apple.
Greek yogurt is a good meal and healthy snack option for diabetics due to its low carb, high protein content.
Load up on fiber – whole grains like quick oats and whole grain cereals are prepared in less than 2 minutes. It is highly advised to look for 100% whole wheat bread or English muffins.
Munch on healthy source of protein – nuts such as almonds, roasted walnuts, pecans, unsalted peanuts are perfect examples.
Egg whites are also good source of protein it can be prepared and ready in a matter of minutes.
Dairy products like soy milk and cottage cheese are also good sources of protein.
If you prefer juice for your breakfast, make a portion with a maximum of 8 ounces. Substitute vegetable for some fruit to make a healthier blend and a low carb drink. You can also add protein powder into your drink
Checking your blood sugar levels two hours after breakfast is important. If the result yields higher than your doctor have set, maybe there is so much carbohydrate consumption and you need to cut back, according to Kelly O’Connor.
