Q1: “Should I buy anti-aging creams and the like?”
A: “Of course, products such as topical retinoids, peptides, and bleaching creams are a great way to regain that youthful glow in your skin. Just have a dermatologist check the products first to make sure that it’s the perfect fit for your skin.” – Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Head, Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Cosmetic and Clinical Research Department
Q2: “There’s a lot of products in the market right now. How do I identify which is bogus or not?”
A: From Dr. Jessica Wu, Assistant Clinical Professor for Dermatology, University of Southern California: “Do not fall into the trap of buying products that promise instant results. When it says that it works as good as a Botox session in one use, it probably isn’t true. Some treatments take time and repeated sessions for it to fully take effect. As always, consult your dermatologist.”
Q3: “At what age is it ideal to start with anti-aging treatments?”
A: Dr. Zeichner says, “If you haven’t been exposed to the sun to a point that it caused you damage, I suggest that you start in your thirties. The recovery of skin cells tend to slow down at that point and some dark spots also start to settle in. Otherwise, you may need to start earlier as to speed up the recovery from the sun damage.”
Q4: “I really want to buy an anti-aging cream but what ingredients should I look out for?”
A: According to dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel, a New York-based dermatologist, there are four key ingredients and products that make up an effective anti-aging regimen:
- Sunscreen which can help avoid wrinkles and fine lines,
- Antioxidants to ease off the damage that your skin gets from the outdoors,
- Retinol to speed up the rejuvenation of your skin, and
- Moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and younger looking.
Q5: “What specific parts of my face should I prioritize in my skin care regimen?”
A: “There are parts in your face that tend to have more defined wrinkling like your forehead and your mouth so those are some obvious target points. The area around your eyes is also prone to damage, so it’s best to have them treated too. But you should remember that anti-aging skin care regimen is not just for specific parts, it should be holistic and should include the whole face and neck areas.” – Dr. Arielle Kuvar, New York-based dermatologist
Q6: “I’ve been using products for a while but I’m curious as to how long should I wait before it takes effect?”
A: “Just like any other treatment, patience is the key for the regime to work. Do not rush into using all of the products to avoid any side effects. At a normal rate, it would take about 60 to 90 days before the results start to show. So don’t worry, you’ll get to where you want to be.”
